HOPE (Help Overcoming Problems Effectively)

The HOPE Programme is designed to support individuals living with long-term health conditions and those close to them to explore the question: “What’s important to me?”

Hope is an evidence-based, accredited course focused on building the confidence and resilience needed to better manage symptoms and navigate life’s challenges.

Rather than focusing on your condition, HOPE places you at the centre. It’s about helping you reconnect with yourself as a whole person. The course supports emotional, psychological, and practical wellbeing through positive strategies, shared experiences, and peer support.

Although many participants describe the course as therapeutic, it’s important to note that HOPE is not therapy. If you feel you need more specialised mental health support, we encourage you to speak to your GP.

What You Can Expect

  • Learn how to support others — and even become a volunteer facilitator.

Course Details

  • Duration: 6 weeks

  • Session length: 2.5 hours per week

  • Format: In-person in Newton Abbot

  • Group size: 6–12 participants

  • Led by: Trained HOPE facilitators

  • Cost: Free to attend

HOPE brings together people who understand what you’re going through. Groups often begin as strangers but leave as friends. Sessions are a mix of:

  • Small group discussions

  • Interactive activities

  • Peer sharing and support

  • Guided tools and take-home strategies

Topics include:

  • Managing fatigue

  • Dealing with stress and emotions

  • Getting more active

  • Communication skills

  • Setting personal goals

  • Keeping a gratitude diary

  • Improving wellbeing and mindset
